SpeedSource Battles to GT Class Victory in Rolex 24

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 31, 2010) - SpeedSource's No. 70 Castrol Syntec Mazda with drivers Sylvain Tremblay, Nick Ham, David Haskell and Jonathan Bomarito battled the elements and a deep deficit before claiming a second victory at the Rolex 24 for the team in three years.
Tremblay began the race Saturday in the third position under caution due to rain that had soaked the track two hours prior to the start. Although the rain quickly let up, on-track conditions remained perilous for several hours due to the damp conditions.
The car lost several laps after pulling into the garage following an on-track incident and vibration issues. This left the team sixth in the GT class at the 14th hour mark, but seven laps off the leader's pace.
However, SpeedSource's bad luck turned around during the final quarter of the race. Mechanical problems and additional misfortunes plagued the strongest competitors late in the race when Stevenson retired with transmission problems and TRG's No. 71 ran out of fuel. For 16 consecutive hours, no other teams had led the GT Class.
This left Tremblay and the No. 70 up front with a four lap advantage. Overall, Tremblay, Ham, Haskell and Bomarito finished seventh with 145 laps led. Bomarito took the checkers to finally complete the 707th GT lap.
"I was fortunate enough to do this race with these same three guys last year. And to be able to come back and have that continuity and that relationship, we just felt so confident in all of each other's ability, the car, and we knew what we had to do. We just had to stay out of trouble and keep the car on the track, and we did that," Bomarito explained.
SpeedSource teammates in the No. 69 FXDD Mazda Jeff Segal, Emil Assentato, Nick Longhi and Anthony Lazzaro began from the pole and were solidly in the top-five until a water leak ended the race early for them after 17 hours. The No. 69 finished 16th in class.
The SpeedSource cars used Alcon CAR7649 front calipers and CAR7141 rear calipers for the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
